Bob and Madge made such a great couple

TCM update for June:  Fast and Loose (1939) and Night Must Fall (1937) will begin their June showings on June 4th and Lovers Courageous (1932) on June 13th.  Meanwhile, three movies from May will continue to run until June 14th (The Divorcee and The Easiest Way) and June 15th (They Were Expendable).  That's a lot of Bob available to watch!  

I definitely need to check out Lovers Courageous.  It has been ages.  Bob and Madge made such a great couple.

Pre-Code Bob Times 8 ...Just Great!

 Ah, gee, aren't they cute.  Dorothy Jordan was such a petite lady.  Check out her right hand resting on top of Bob's rather large hand.  Almost doesn't look real.

Hope you got a chance to watch some of Bob's movies from Monday's mini marathon.  So far, four of them will be available to stream on TCM until mid-August:  Love in the Rough, Strangers May Kiss (1931), Untamed (1929), and Lovers Courageous (1932).  The Divorcee (1930) is available only to July 21st.  For some reason, Another Language (1933) and Private Lives (1931) are shown as available to be streamed, but the ending dates are not included in the write-up.  And When Ladies Meet (1934) is not listed at all.  Not that I'm complaining.  Overall, this summer is proving to be just great for Bob movies.  Thanks again to the programmer at TCM!

Bob and Madge and Clarence Makes Three

 My, but were they a cute couple, I mean Bob and Madge Evans of course.  And photographer Clarence S. Bull took numerous great pictures of the two for the film, Lovers Courageous of course.

Tired, Perhaps, But More Likely Bored

Oh, Heck ... They're All Great

 I used this photograph of Bob and Madge Evans on the blog some time back.  It is just one of numerous gorgeous photos taken of the two by Clarence S. Bull for the movie Lovers Courageous (1932).  Now this is a scan of the photograph I purchased, but there is a slight problem with it that I overlooked.  I certainly did not intend to misrepresent the photo.  Have you figured out what is "wrong" with it?

Yup, it is a flipped image.  I have run across flipped photos in magazines, newspapers, and what have you ... but few actual photos have that problem.  Or at least that I've run across.  Hmm...maybe I should thumb through my photo files.  

It's the pocket on Bob's jacket being on his right side that was the tell sign.  Whatever, they are both great photos!  You hold onto him, Madge!  He's a great catch.  

A Strange Silence about Bob Montgomery

 This article was published July 26, 1936.  I obtained it as a clipping, do not have the name of the magazine, but it appears to be British.  Bob had slowed down his film career in 1935-36, rather enjoyed his 3-month vacations.  And then there was his illness (?), the Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) hassle, the Thalberg-Mayer war and Thalberg's death, Bob's SAG involvement, etc., etc., etc.  A lot of stress for everybody!

Such a Good Looking Young Couple

Yes, Lovers Courageous (1932) is available for streaming on TCM until June 23rd.  It has been too long since I watched it.  Now I have no excuse not to.

Oh, and They Were Expendable (1945) is also being shown, but on the 29th at 4:30 a.m. PT.  Whoa.  Not even TWE can get me up at that atrocious hour!  

Reginald Owen, The Fashion Setter

 I miss men's hats.  (Baseball caps are in a category all by themselves, part of a baseball uniform, not hats.)  Everybody wore hats in the 1930s.  Different styles, various colors ... and that's just the men's.  Bob had a number of dark green hats.  I'm sure that would set off his blue eyes and brunette hair.  The hat he wore in Lovers Courageous (1932) is nifty, with the turned down brim.  Like Madge's cloche hats as well.    

Reginald Owen's hat ... well, it is different.  

Lovers Courageous will be shown by TCM May 24th at 9:15 a.m. PT.  Hope it will be available to stream afterwards.  9:15 is just a tad too early for me.  

"...a tip-top entertainment."

 I purchased this magazine for the cover.  Definitely a worthwhile investment for me!  Finding anything about Bob inside is always a welcome treat. 

 Now this feature has a interesting tie-in with Bob.  So, Bob is a "Number 4 person," I'd never have guessed that!!  Anyway, some of the attributes of a 4 person rather fit Mr. Montgomery.

But, It's Not Going to Fit on the Marquee, Paul!

 In my pursuit of all things Montgomery, I occasionally find myself buying photo lots for that one elusive picture of Bob I don't have.  Most of the other photos are tossers, but I am your basic photo hoarder so I still have them around ... somewhere.  Last year I came across a lot of five fan photos, one of which was Bob out and about in Beverly Hills in 1943, which I used in a previous post.  As it turns out, all of the five are keepers.  

Paul Henreid had to shorten his name a tad when he entered acting.  Get this one:  Paul Georg Julius Freiherr von Hernreid Ritter von Wasel-Waldingau.  Now that's impressive.  So was Mr. Henreid physically, a robust 6' 3".  I point that out because it looks like he was cornered at night by an aggressive fan as he was headed for his perhaps hotel room (note the number by his shoulder).  I think he is showing tremendous restraint.  

I'll share the others at another time.  Time for me to head off for a needed night's repose.  Oh, and Lovers Courageous (1932) will be available for streaming on TCM until June 20th.  Bob and Madge at their cutest! 

Handsome Couple + Great Photo = Sheer Joy

 There are so many great publicity photos taken of Bob and Madge Evans for Lovers Courageous (1932).  In my dream home (without a hubby with decorating veto power!), I'd fill an entire wall with them.  This photo is in perfect shape on double-weight paper ... just gorgeous.   Bob is a youthful 27, Madge is 22.  And they are good friends, a great pairing.

Just Me and My Shadow

Two fresh-faced kids spending an evening at home, hubby continuing to burn the late-night oil while the Mrs. stands by to support him.  Ahh ... Yes, another nifty publicity photo for Lovers Courageous (1932) with our two young lovebirds, Willie and Mary.  I like the shadows ... Madge's shadow on the wall and Bob's profile on Madge.  The photographer was enjoying himself.

It Helps To Get Along With Your Co-Star

Clarence Sinclair Bull took the publicity photos for Bob's movie Lovers Courageous (1932).  There are a good number of them and each one is better than the next.  It is difficult to beat a combination of a good photographer and two quite handsome subjects.  27-year-old Bob and 22-year-old Madge Evans seem to be the perfectly matched couple, who will go on to make four more movies together [Hell Below (1933), Made on Broadway (1933), Fugitive Lovers (1934) and Piccadilly Jim (1936)], as well as maintaining a long-lived friendship off-screen.  

The photo below is my current favorite, mostly because it is my most recent purchase!

A Belated (July 1st) Happy Birthday to Madge!

 Madge Evans made five movies with Bob, they were simply a great couple up there on the big screen.  Lovers Courageous (1932) was their first movie, which appears to have produced the most stills of the two as the young lovers.  Clarence S. Bull took the photos.  He did a great job, but, then, he did have two great subjects with which to work. 

Just love this one, the way Madge (Mary) is holding Bob (Willie) and looking adoringly into his eyes.  Sigh.  Lucky lady! 

The Eyes Have It

Bob made five movies with Madge Evans, they were a great pairing.  Those five movies produced a lengthy list of great promotional shots of the couple.  For Lovers Courageous (1932), the shots are of a young, adorable couple.  A year later, for Hell Below, it is a much more mature couple that is captured in some downright sexy photos.  In the photo below, notice how their bodies are intertwined, but they are gazing away from each other.   Yeah, they are past the stage of long, yearning looks into each other's eyes.  Could that be just a bit of a smirk on Bob's face?

Happy Birthday, Ms. Evans!

Well, it's almost Madge's birthday ... born July 1, 1909.  Madge (Miss Nice Girl) Evans made five movies with Bob:  Lovers Courageous (1932), Hell Below (1933), Made on Broadway (1933), Fugitive Lovers (1934) and Piccadilly Jim (1936).  They were a handsome/cute couple, certainly not edgy like Bob and Joan.  Just love the many great photos of the two from Lovers Courageous and Fugitive Lovers.  Today, it's just Madge.  Definitely a tad more than "cute". 

Okay ... Who Is Cuter?

Bob made five films with Madge Evans:  Lovers Courageous, Hell Below, Made on Broadway, Fugitive Lovers and Piccadilly Jim.   They made a great pair and the publicity stills of the two for Lovers Courageous and Fugitive Lovers are simply wonderful.  Such a nice-looking couple.  Yeah, you hold on to him, Madge.  He's a darn good catch!
