It is June 6, 1937. A beautiful day in Santa Monica. The occasion is a polo benefit presented by the Uplifters, an invitation-only, men's-only social club. The master of ceremonies is Jack Oakie, pictured below with (L-R) Mrs. Oakie, Heather Angel and Robert Montgomery. I do wonder why Heather is included in this photo. She can't be a member of the club. However, she is small, British and snuggled up against Mr. Montgomery. Umm. This is not the only photo I have of the two together. Umm. Just saying....

Bob is wearing THE mid-to-late 1930's Montgomery outfit. The jacket, white slacks, the movie-reel tie and the straw hat ... he must have worn out the outfit. And his 5 o'clock shadow. He would have fit in so well with today's scruffy beards look. I mean, this man could grow a full beard over a long weekend.
