Odds and Ends: Tennis, Ring, Autograph

Ah, the young Mr. Montgomery dressed in proper attire for a game of tennis.  Life is good, one big smile.   I'm guessing it was taken at his 2815 N. Beachwood Dr. home.  This is a trading card, in the 1-1/2" to 2-1/2" range.  Excellent photograph.

This is Bob's signet ring with the family crest.  Finally found a photograph clear enough to enable me to blow up the ring a gazillion times to be able to see the crest.  Nice ring.

Back in the 1960s, 1970s, fans could send a photograph and return envelope to a star, ask for an autograph and actually have it returned.  This one was even displayed, those rust spots in the corners are from thumbtacks.  Bob's signature is on his arm.  It's an older Bob signature, probably from the 1970s.  I should really kick myself for not taking the initiative to contact a star or two.  Ouch.

Bob's Fifteen Year Struggle to Talk!

A rather interesting article which appeared in the March, 1935 issue of Modern Screen.

We've got our eyes on you, Heather!

It is June 6, 1937.  A beautiful day in Santa Monica.  The occasion is a polo benefit presented by the Uplifters, an invitation-only, men's-only social club.  The master of ceremonies is Jack Oakie, pictured below with (L-R) Mrs. Oakie, Heather Angel and Robert Montgomery.  I do wonder why Heather is included in this photo.  She can't be a member of the club.  However, she is small, British and snuggled up against Mr. Montgomery.  Umm.  This is not the only photo I have of the two together.  Umm.  Just saying....

Bob is wearing THE mid-to-late 1930's Montgomery outfit.  The jacket, white slacks, the movie-reel tie and the straw hat ... he must have worn out the outfit.  And his 5 o'clock shadow.  He would have fit in so well with today's scruffy beards look.  I mean, this man could grow a full beard over a long weekend.

Bob and Another Stressful Day at Work

Bob looking downright comfortable in his office at, I'm guessing here, MGM studios in late 1945 or 1946.  Totally at ease.  Wonder if he considered any job a challenge.

Those shoes look familiar.  My husband had a pair just like those, wore them back in the 70's I'd guess.  Bob the trendsetter.

Those round smudges in the blinds are stains on the photograph.  My 4"x5" photo is all brown, brown and stained, including one across his face.  Took me a while to save his face...always a worthwhile effort!

Once Again, Belated Happy Birthday Raymond!

Ray Milland was born January 3, 1907.  That was January 3rd.  Repeating it one more time, Ray's birthday is January 3rd.  Geesch, why can't I remember that!  Still foggy from New Year's celebrations?  It's highlighted on both my personal and all-things-Montgomery calendars.  Sigh.  Will try my best next year.  Promise.

Meanwhile, Happy Birthday, Mr. Milland, you roguishly handsome lad, you.  TCM did a full day tribute.  That's just great.  Now, if they'd do the same for Mr. Montgomery.  He's due.

Bob Parties with his Hero

Lt. Cmdr. Henry Montgomery, Jr.,  meets his boss Admiral William Halsey at a party in his honor.  Halsey's girl for the evening is Ann Sheridan, who was in charge of the Hollywood welcoming committee.  It's the look on Bob's face ... almost giggling, being in Halsey's presence.

Calm yourself, Montgomery.  Remember, Halsey's on your turf now.
