Personal Property (1937)

Personal Property is a fun remake of The Man in Posession, arguably one of Robert Montgomery's best films. Which reminds me, I need to write about that film one of these days.

In the meantime, some picspam from the only film Robert Taylor and Jean Harlow starred together in. A shame really...

History's Mysteries: Antoine de Saint Exupéry

Y'all know I'm a film/aviation/history nerd by now. Here's a news bit that includes all three. A Luftwaffe pilot is claiming that he shot down the author/pilot Antoine de Saint Exupéry during WWII. Saint-Exupéry wrote The Little Prince and a number of aviation related stories, including Night Flight, which was made into a movie in 1933.

Horst Rippert, the Luftwaffe pilot, noted in an interview: "If I had known it was Saint Exupéry I would never have shot him down."

Oops.

In 1998, Saint Exupéry's P-38 aircraft wreckage was located, excavated, and given to a museum in France.

Wednesday Blips & Beeps

I have entered into a Dick Powell phase - quite coincidentally actually. I'm not talking the 30s Powell (just a matter of time...), but the bit more "grown up" version of the 1940s. Saturday night consisted of the last 45 minutes of The Bad and the Beautiful. Sunday was Star Spangled Rhythm. SSR is one of those films where a studio grabs any and all stars from the lot and sprinkles them throughout the film. Queue the scene with Dick Powell and Mary Martin singing "Hit the Road to Dreamland":

I could watch this scene over & over again. The tune is stuck in my head now. Argh, where's my copy of Murder, My Sweet?

And finally, I just want to give props to Amazon.com for excellent customer service. Sunday night I popped in Female from the Forbidden Hollywood V2 set, only to find the DVD skipping & doing other "possessed" things. Nine p.m., fill out the online return form and boom, Tuesday I have the replacement DVD. Ruth Chatterton's character gave in way too easy in the end, but that's a whole other issue...

One More Iteration - Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Ha, I bet you thought I was done posting different radio versions of Mr. and Mrs. Smith! So did I.

Nope, there's one more I've located, from the Hollywood Star Time show, which aired July 20, 1946. Frigidaire brings you Robert Montgomery and Mary Jane Croft in the roles you've come to love (and memorize) by now. I believe this last MP3 covers all of the Bob presentations of the story over the air.
