Is it Real or is it Memorex? Part 3 of 3

CAPTAIN BOB - In a production still for "The Gallant Hours", James Cagney, as a retiring Halsey, shakes hands with his officers as he leaves his ship.  That is Bob, as one of the officers, with a big smile for Jim.  Those Captain stripes are real, Bob having obtained his captaincy in the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1956.

Is it Real or is it Memorex, Part 2 of 3

BOB PLAYS NAVAL OFFICER - Bob, who served as a Commander of a PT boat squadron in 1942, portrays a PT boat Commander in "They Were Expendable."  His portrayal was so realistic, are we surprised?  It is most enjoyable to watch him effortlessly portraying the skipper in action,  jumping in and out of boats with such grace.  Right on, Bob, that had to be fun, not having to worry about enemy fire.

Is it Real or is it Memorex? Part 1 of 3

Hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend.  I'm thinking everyone has had enough barbequed food to last until, oh, probably July 4th.  What I'm sure you have not had enough of is honoring the people who have served their country by remembering them.  What follows is a brief remembrance of sailor Montgomery, with a Hollywood bent, of course.

BOB AND CLARK - Lt. Commander, Robert Montgomery, U.S. Navy, and Captain Clark Gable, U.S. Army, January 15, 1944.  The uniforms are real, both men the real stuff, but two big-time Hollywood actors enlisting to serve their country?  From the viewpoint of 2012, how so surreal.

A Beautiful Young Man

Hi!  My name is Kathy, and I'm a movie fan.  A long-time fan --- for far longer than I care to admit.  From the day my Dad finally gave in and bought our first TV, I was glued to the set, watching for any showing of those wonderful movies from the '30s and '40s.  I was transfixed by all the beautiful people and homes, and the fascinating lives they led.  It was a great escape for a young Missouri farm girl.

Zoom forward to 2012 ... My house may not be filled with white bear rugs and gorgeous Art-Deco furniture, but I did escape the farm.  And, thanks to today's technology, I can still watch those beautiful young men and strong women in their great adventures.

Yes, beautiful young men.  A 27 year-old Bob Montgomery is to die for.  Joan Crawford was a strong woman, Bob was beautiful and a fine comedic actor.  He became so much more in his lifetime, the 19th Century idea of a gentleman, a most admirable man.  But, that fantastic smile, the voice ... my.  Thank you, Carrie, for allowing me to share the passion.

Get Out of Work: Watch Robert Montgomery Instead

You have my permission to skip work on May 21 to celebrate Robert Montgomery's birthday. Feel free to print this blog post and hand to your boss.  However, if you work at TCM and are responsible for pressing the big "play" button on this day, my excuse excludes you. Your boss is pretty awesome for playing a bunch of Bob movies for us fans.

I'm in CST, so make sure you adjust your schedule for your time zone:
  • 5:45 AM - Faithless
  • 7:15 AM - Another Language
  • 8:45 AM - When Ladies Meet
  • 10:15 AM - Trouble For Two
  • 11:45 AM - Mr. and Mrs. Smith
