It's 2010. Do you know where your favorite stars are?

I vaguely remember in the back of my mind the series of Diet Coke commercials with dead movie stars in them. Cary Grant is the only star I really remember. John Wayne may have been another, although I can't picture John Wayne drinking anything with the word "diet" in it.

The reason I bring this up is an article floating around the interwebs about George Lucas purchasing film rights to dead celebrities. Add to that 3D.

First off, 3D is ok. My only experience with modern 3D technology was via a demo at a Sony outlet store. After noting how dumb it was - nothing looked 3D - the clerk kindly asked if the glasses were "on." Slight oversight.

Anyhow, back to the topic. What are your thoughts on dead movie stars being generated in a new movie?

I'm torn. Part of me thinks it would be pretty slick, but then they'd give Robert Montgomery blonde hair. In general, it's the novelty that appeals to me.

On the flip side, many stars were pretty adamant about what types of movies they wanted to appear in (or not). C'mon, can't you picture middle-aged Orson Welles "inserted" into a National Lampoon college humor movie?

Any dream scenario you'd like to see?

No. No, no, NO.

Pretty soon actors will be obsolete, and all that will flicker on the screen will be soulless CGI creations. I wouldn't want someone using my likeness after I'd gone, I doubt these folks would either.

I'm vehemently against the classic stars being 3d-ed in some plasticky Lucas-helmed horror. Perhaps I'm overprotective and extra-sensitive of the vintage greats, but I couldn't even stand those Breyer's commercials that were made a year ago. There were two total, swapping classic Hollywood mega-stars for *cringe* Jane Krakowski.

And the thought of GEORGE LUCAS of all people calling the shots on such a production fills me with utter terror. This is the man who freely admits to appropriating sound effects from The Adventures of Robin Hood (Errol Flynn version). He obviously lacks the basic respect even the most novice fan feels.

To quote the genius, Groucho Marx, "Whatever it is, I'm AGAINST it!"

Ugh...I'm totally torn in two! Though the 'against' part of me is a million times bigger than my 'for' part.

Point number one: I really do not like 3D. It works sometimes. Others...not so much.

Point number two: I would hate, hate, hate it if one day I was talking about, say, Cary Grant, and my friend turned to me and said, 'Is he the person in (insert name of modern movie here)?' It would actually break my heart!

On the other hand, I would love to see my favourite actors and actresses on the big screen, but then...

No, I think I'm against it. I'm so indecisive! ;-P

Great thought-provoking post!

I can just imagine someone getting Bob and Carole Lombard together for a sequel to "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." (Or, shudder, putting them in a version of the Brangelina movie of the same name.)

I wrote about this today at http://community.livejournal.com/carole_and_co/360363.html

I think Niamhy may have touched on why I have a positive curiosity toward the idea: "On the other hand, I would love to see my favourite actors and actresses on the big screen, but then..."

Never having seen one my fav. stars on the big screen on opening night, there's that urge to want to live that out. Boy, that sounds deeper than I really meant it to sound!
