I've always had trouble understanding Navy rank but I just learned that a Lt. Commander in the Navy is equivalent to a Major in the Army. This means that Ernest Borgnine as Lt. Commander McHale in McHale's Navy would have also been a Major in the Army and that Captain Binghamton would have been a Colonel. This bit of information leaves me with two questions.
First, if McHale held a high rank like Lt. Commander what was he doing commanding a PT boat? Robert Montgomery and John Wayne were only Lieutenants in the film They Were Expendable.
Second, if Captain Binghamton was equivalent to a Colonel in the Army would he be the same rank as Colonel Klink in Hogan's Heroes or is a German Colonel different than an American Colonel? Inquiring minds want to know.
Ohboy - I have no clue. However, I believe rank naming from service to service doesn't mean equality. So, the colonel here may not quite be the colonel somewhere else.
Oh man! Be still my heart! Fabulous picture! Thanks again Carrie
