If you were to pin me into a corner and ask for my favorite Bob Montgomery films, I'd have to admit a fondness for Another Language. Released in 1933, this MGM gem offers a cast that fits together perfectly to tell the story of the Hallam family - right after the honeymoon.
I recommend checking out the New York Times review of the film's showing at the Capitol Theater in NYC. According to the newspaper, the film was quite true to the play by Rose Franken.
And from the NY Times review, one of those "wish I was there" moments, a live presentation at the Capitol:
Robert Montgomery and Irene Purcell performing in a short scene from the second act of Noel Coward's "Private Lives" is the feature of the stage show at the Capitol Theatre this week and, by the way Mr. Montgomery and Miss Purcell have at each other, one would assume that they mean to emulate Mr. Coward and Miss Gertrude Lawrence in physical violence if not in histrionic accomplishment.
Just an aside, Irene Purcell starred in The Man In Possession with Bob in 1931.

Anyway, I love the movies that start out with the story written on the screen. I noticed Bob has his hands clenched by his sides again. I don't know if this was something he did when he was older? Had anyone noticed from later movies? I really like this movie. Early Bob.
I do love this movie... I may have to dig up my old VHS copy now that you got me in the mood for it! I think the cast in this movie is spectacular.
Tracy: Where did I read about Bob mannerisms when he was on stage. Oh, this is going to drive me nuts now. Something along the lines of things he unknowingly did on stage until he saw himself on film. This film is prob. further along down the line, but...
Kate Gabrielle: The cast is great, but I could never get into John Beal - always comes across as overly whiny to me!
If you figure it out, let me know please, because I have often wondered about some of the repeated things he does.
Handwringing - it's in "The Debonairs." I don't think that's the complete story I remember though...
I think he also has a clenched fist thing by his side, esp the right side. I notice that too a lot with Julia Roberts.
