My goodness, what a beautiful photo, but Joan Crawford just got better looking for subsequent two decades! That is an "actual, unretouched" photograph by Hurrell; rarely did a portrait like that one leave the studio without evidence of its negative having been retouched with a pencil, or print retouching with an etching-knife. I had such a career in New York many years ago.

It's amazing you don't see the freckles more often! In Vieira's Hurrell book, there's a nice comparison of a Joan photo before and after retouching.
